Fiat 500 Hybrid Rolls Out: A New Era for the Italian Icon
The Italian automobile manufacturer, Fiat, has unveiled a new hybrid version of its popular 500 series. The newest addition to the 500 family boasts a similar platform architecture as the fully electric 500e variant and features an impressive list of upgrades.
Design and Features
The exterior design of the new 500 Hybrid is nearly identical to that of the 500e, with refreshed front grille styling tailored specifically for hybrid models. The car retains its distinctive signature style that fans of the classic Fiat 500 have come to associate with it.
Internally, significant changes can be seen, particularly in the center console and gearshift relocation. A larger, square storage compartment has been incorporated, along with an improved shift knob placement that adheres to the new convention set by previous petrol variants of the Fiat 500.
Power Transmission
The specifications for the new hybrid version are yet to be revealed publicly; however, it is anticipated that the vehicle will feature a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder engine in conjunction with its electric propulsion system. Transmissions would include a 6-speed manual gear unit as noted previously by Fiat officials.
Fiat's Investment Plan
Fiat has committed significant resources to electrification efforts through its new electric FCA platform in their bid to ramp down losses and improve the sustainability of their models, including significant investments into hybrid technology. Specifically, the company plans to devote about €1 billion towards the development of an improved platform for future electric variants such as the 500e.
The unveiling comes at a time when Fiat is poised to kick off its new production line in late Q4, which promises to launch more sustainable automobiles across their entire product suite by 2026.
