The new Generation of the Volvo s90 officially went on sale on May 29th of this year. A total of seven models are available for purchase. The car is priced within a limiting time reference luxury zone, with a retail price range of 30.09 million to 45.49 million RMB.

Exterior and Interior

The new Generation Volvo S90 undergoes significant exterior upgrades and interior updates. The driving system still maintains two powertrains, B5 mixed-gas turbine and plugged-in mixed gas turbine (T8).

The model has undergone overall changes in styling, particularly with the introduction of a new movement model design, featuring dual appearance styles respectively for luxurious and sports models. Sports versions are equipped with new matte black finishes. Additionally, new colors Forest Berry Red is introduced, and Starry Gray, Snow White Pearl, Mauve Black, Tornado Grey, Caramel Brown, and Bee Grey remain unchanged.

The front grille uses a non-traditional asymmetric intersecting design inspired by traditional Scandinavian fashion, giving it a more refined look. The front headlamps receive new LED lighting designs with adaptive near-and-far headlights functions.

Side views retain their typical straight shoulder profile that embodies the essence of Volvo, while width and length both reach 5.09m and 1.879m, making room for rear seats. A larger wheelbase of 3061mm is provided, supporting vehicles to come equipped with either R18 or R19 wheels.

Upon arrival at the tail end, Volvo S90 receives new tail lamp design upgrades that matches headlight style. After dark grey finishes are applied uniformly on the lower sections, a unique design can be observed with a subtle sense of movement and rhythm.

Inside the cabin, the first major feature to notice is an entirely remodeled 11.2-inch floating display. The user interface also receives updates, including one-touch operation and AI-enabled voice assistants functionality available by default.

Nappa leather outer seats now surround the front passengers, equipped with functions like electrically heated, ventilated, massage, memory adjustment for both driver and passenger, as well as an intelligent mobile charging socket. Front LCD instrument display screen remains at 12.3 inches, while HUD and windshield visor are both retained in their current form.

Other noteworthy features include the addition of a new Forest Berry Red exterior color and slight tuning of front steering wheel design. Pivi Information System retains its 12.3-inch liquid crystal touchscreen with high-definition image projection display.

Competing Vehicles

The S90 has always been one of Volvo's top competitors within the "BBA" group since its release in 2016, targeting Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class models as rivals.

In an effort to enhance style and safety along with a strong lineup in the mid-segment SUV category, it once again offers itself for consumption at its unique Nordic design point, while maintaining mixed gas, hybrid electric, or fully electrical vehicle engines.

Editorial Assessment:

Speaking with Volvo Cars China Sales CEO, on previous statements concerning their new energy transformation plans which plan to launch seven car types in 2025, it seems like the latest S90 update brings the product line up again and again.

While the sales situation for cars can be dynamic at any point of time due to seasonal consumer behavior and other variable factors, the introduction of several new model families this year is seen as a strong development step by Volvo to raise the value and competitiveness further in their overall lineup.
