Mercedes-AMG's Surprise Mid-Gen C63: Trading Inline-Six for Hybrid V6 - What's Behind the Change?

Mercedes-AMG to Replace Inline-Six Petrol Engine with Electric Motor in S-Class

In recent weeks, Mercedes-AMG has confirmed that their AMG C 63 model will undergo a mid-cycle facelift, resulting in the adoption of inline-six petrol-electric hybrid powertrain. The revamped car is expected to make its official debut in 2026.

The company has also revealed plans to update the GLC 63 with an identical powertrain configuration. Despite initial expectations for a powerful V8-engined variant, Mercedes-AMG has opted for a more sustainable future. In contrast, the CLE 63 and E 63 models will retain their massive M177 4.0L Bi-Turbo V8 engine.

A quick recap of the current C 63 serves as a reference point. Featuring the M139 code-named 2.0T inline-five turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor for hybrid propulsion, this variant boasts an impressive total output of 680 horsepower and 1020 Nm torque. Despite this potent setup, demand seems to be low.

According to high-ranking C-Class engineers, Mercedes-AMG has chosen not to install V8 engines on the new-generation C 63 model due to limitations associated with the MRA platform. These limitations include insufficient space for larger engine size and more advanced cooling systems as well as inadequate crash protection capabilities. The car's future electric motors will help counterbalance these constraints.
