Mercedes-Benz Extends Sales of Gasoline and Hybrid Models
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius has stated that the company is being forced to adjust its strategy, extending the sales timeline for gasoline-powered models. The German luxury car manufacturer had previously announced plans to become fully electrified by 2030.
Källenius has emphasized that in the current circumstances, the most reasonable approach would be to coexist with both gasoline-powered and electric vehicles rather than ignoring one technology altogether. This decision follows Audi's recent declaration of an extension for the sales timeframe of its gasoline-powered models.
Despite this shift, new energy cars continue to dominate global markets, particularly among Chinese consumers. The majority market share of plug-in and battery-electric vehicles comes from China, with three-quarters of the world's electric car sales concentrated in the country. Moreover, Mercedes-Benz operates in China as a critical segment for its broader business.
According to Källenius, Chinese consumers perceive cars as not just modes of transportation but spaces where they spend time, referring to their "second living room." As such, Mercedes-Benz has stated that it will continue with its electrification strategy while maintaining two core strategic paths.
