Hyundai Reveals Teaser Images of All-New EV2 Coupe Style Version
South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group has released a series of teaser images for its upcoming all-electric coupe style version, the Hyundai EV2. The car is positioned as a pure electric small-sized vehicle alongside competitors such as the Mini Cooper Electric and Firefly.
According to reports, the new car will still share the E-GMP platform with existing models, featuring a 400V architecture. It is expected to be officially launched within the current year, with an estimated overseas price tag of £23,000 (approximately ¥21,000). More information on pricing and specifications will be provided in due course.
The EV2 Coupe Style Version appears to employ a similar design language to its concept counterpart, albeit with enhanced styling features for a more cohesive look.
Teaser Images
A sneak peek at the teaser images showcases the thick disguise worn by the car, but some notable design cues can still be spotted – such as the distinctive backlit LED taillights on either side of the vehicle.
The front end is expected to adopt Hyundai's new Oppsites United family faceplate design. The headlights likely have a distinctive seven-character pattern, paired with an enclosed upper grille that provides a sleek-tech look.
Design and Features
A close-l look reveals the EV2 Coupe will retain much of its predecessor's compact proportions while incorporating some style updates to enhance its ruggedness without compromising comfort levels, particularly at the rear. Note how well integrated these side air ducts into the main body are with little hint of what they might be there used for.
We've noticed that the back end appears rather flat and utilitarian compared to what was shown in official pre-release shots. Nevertheless, this should mean an improved use of interior floor space with all the extra light pouring in – it’s possible, therefore, that this rear design is less suited to more affluent passengers than its sleeker alternatives.
Powertrain
Details surrounding powertrain specifications are scarce at present, but we do know Hyundai EV2 will utilize a 400V platform architecture. This implies the use of advanced batteries offering the potential for high performance electric motoring. We can also confirm it’ll just have one electric motor unit – though whether this is driven entirely by an internal combustion-free power generator or assisted to varying degrees by conventional engine(s) in lower speed situations remains unclear.
With limited data available, we recommend waiting until official specifications are released before making any assumptions about performance capabilities of the car. As a starting point however, it’s well worth noting Hyundai's other recent electrified cars have achieved maximum ranges well over 200 miles depending on battery capacity, with potentially longer stretches further down the line for each successive update to their technology.
Speculative Pricing
In related EV2 news, those expecting the price tag of Hyundai’s existing competitors will initially be disappointed as it is projected that sales models in international markets will cost slightly more than £23,000. At this scale though, you can’t go wrong with any choice when there’s a relatively small gap like this – especially if there’s ample availability and ongoing model updates ahead as with every other new entrant over the past few years.
