Canceling the Electric Dream: Why Tesla's MC20 Project Was Shuffled

Maruti official cancels MC20 electric version project

Maruti officials have confirmed that the company has cancelled its plans to launch an all-electric version of the MC20. The electric model was announced in 2020 and was expected to feature a tri-motor powertrain with over 700 horsepower.

However, according to Maruti officials, the company conducted market research and customer surveys in recent times which indicated less interest from enthusiasts towards pure electric sports cars, particularly in the supercar segment. Consumers were more keen on high-performance gasoline-powered engines.

Additionally, the purely-electric MC20 model was seen to lack commercial viability and significant profits. Maruti also reduced its development budget for this project in response to decreased sales of other models.

As a result of cancelling the electric version of MC20, plans for upcoming all-electric SUVs and crossovers are expected to face significant uncertainties.

Among them are full electric Levante variant scheduled for release in 2027, which is speculated to replace its regular counterpart; otherwise already slated releases of an all electric Levant model slated to hit the market only by 2028. In contrast Maruti can look forward to optimizing, renewing and updating gasoline powered M20 version through the most recent introduction such as MC20 GT2 Stradale variant by gaining higher energy consumption of up to 10 more units and significant vehicle weight reduction by shedding 60 kilograms whereas incorporating more aerodynamics features.

Currently existing all electric models are Grecale PHEV, GranTurismo PHEV and GRancio PHEV.

It has come to notice that 33 Stradale, which was launched along side the MC20, has been available since its introduction in gasoline versions; global deliveries of the model were announced, meanwhile Alfa Romeo will have a launch event soon with new car details unveiled - there might be three-motor 750 horsepower pure electric variant.
