BYD Puts Behind Rumors on Engine Oil Use in Chinese PHEV Cars
Beijing, June 8 — In a move to clear the air around allegations about engine oil use in Chinese plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs), BYD's Brand Communications Department Manager, Mr. Li Yunfei, has recently published a statement on social media.
The official said that China’s PHEV technology and standards are far ahead of the rest of the world, thanks to sustained research and development by multiple Chinese automobile brands over the years. The company’s use of compression oil tank schemes since 2021 is in compliance with regulatory requirements.
Regarding BYD's decision to switch from compressed oil tanks (commonly referred to as "constant pressure oil tanks") to high-pressure oil tanks after some customers complained about having a poor start-up experience, Mr. Li explained that the latest change was based on feedback received, citing difficulties encountered by some clients during periodic starts using conventional compressor oil.
Meanwhile, BYD confirmed that other major automobile manufacturers also adopted compressed oil tank schemes from 2018 to 2023 for some of their PHEV models, noting that both measures are in line with environmental and regulatory standards for such vehicles.
