Volkswagen id.5 ET5 Spotted: New Design, Updated Features

A series of new images emerged on May 7th, revealing the Volkswagen ID.5 ET5. According to previous reports, this second-generation model is based on a re-engineered "NT2.5 platform" compared to its predecessor's NT2.0 platform, with a similar horizontal screen layout and a more prominent dashboard design.

The new ID.5 ET5 appears to have undergone significant changes in terms of exterior details, with the most noticeable difference being the revised daytime running lights (DRLs). The updated DRLs are longer and sleeker, complemented by angular-shaped lower fog lamps, a closed front grille, and increased air-intake openings. This results in a sharper visual presence overall.

Compared to its predecessor, the new ID.5 ET5's side mirror design is largely consistent with the existing model. However, it can be expected that users will have access to upgraded wheel designs through later iterations.

Internally, Volkswagen has concentrated on refinements for interior features, notably in the form of a redesigned horizontal center screen and more advanced infotainment system incorporating gesture controls. The dashboard now boasts more substantial storage compartments within the center console area. Enhanced mobile charging capabilities – with two smartphone wireless charging areas and adjusted position cups – cater to user convenience needs better.

Beyond these aesthetic changes, Volkswagen is gearing up with cutting-edge technology and driving innovation by leveraging sophisticated advanced driver assistance systems from its subsidiary company's cutting-edge research facilities. The advanced AI module for high-end Intelligent Driving (ID5+), using a highly-efficient processing unit along with advanced machine learning capabilities – including the use of 4-chip multi-core process architecture with enhanced performance compared to the industry leading competitors.

The powertrain features are still in line with its predecessors, offering Volkswagen's familiar front-assisted asynchronous permanent-lubricated permanent-synchronous motor setup – now with a combined power output of up to 490 horsepower – accompanied by substantial improved efficiency. The battery side stays unchanged with both variants (75kWh and the newer high-grade variant 100kWh) continuing to be capable for extended ranges on various drives, offering overall total operational distances ranging from 660km to up to 710 kilometres respectively.

In terms of pricing in the home market for a base model starting priced at a reduced value by around $20000, its upgraded and more advanced variants were priced around twice that premium ($350k) including respective monthly premiums, reflecting Volkswagen's clear desire to enhance overall driving performance capabilities along with increasing its price competitiveness.
