Tesla Begins Shipping Electric Vehicles to India, Eyes Potential Market Opportunity
Tesla has started shipping its electric vehicles from China to India, marking a significant step towards the company's entry into the Indian market. The first shipment included Model Y rear-wheel drive vehicles.
As part of its preparations for the Indian launch, Tesla is also setting up charging networks across the country, purchasing spare parts and accessories, as well as sourcing components from US, Chinese, and Dutch suppliers. These initiatives aim to make Tesla's products available to customers in India and provide a range of support services.
Tesla first discussed its plans to enter the Indian market in 2015, but was hampered by tariffs and regulatory issues. However, with the Indian government reducing the import duty on foreign automakers from 110% to 15%, the door is now open for new entrants into the highly competitive market.
The Tesla vehicles being shipped to India come from the company's Shanghai Superfactory, contrary to earlier speculations that suggested Berlin Superfactory would be involved. In January, it was reported that the Berlin facility planned to start production for the Indian market, but this appears not to have materialized.
Tesla's move into India is set to bring its range of electric vehicles to customers in one of the largest markets in the world. The company plans to open exhibition spaces in July and expects to tap into growth opportunities in the fast-growing EV sector.
