Porsche Unveils All-New 963RSP Road Car, Paying Homage to the Legendary 917
Date: June 6, 2023
Porsche has officially released its brand-new road car, the 963RSP, a unique highway supercar inspired by its current racing car, the 963 racing car. This new model is born from a 50-year-old project aimed at paying homage to the iconic 917 model.
The Porsche 963RSP represents Porsche's half-century of racing spirit as a road art piece, combining legendary V7 heritage with modern technology and luxurious elements while still allowing for on-road legality under specific conditions. It maintains a close design resemblance to its predecessor, most strikingly its distinctive silver-gray paintwork reminiscent of the classic 1975 917 Highway Series version has been reintroduced.
This retro-futuristic look comes from layering three layers of Porschemain silvery clear coat via water base technology and replacing a tape sticker with air-drag-influenced hood opening flaps, both evoking the era's 'chassis' racing car aesthetic. The rear wheel's structural exposure showcases sleekness alongside the modern high-performance engine sound emanating from the typical exhaust outlets.
The exterior design of road-only Porsche 963RSPs draws on its motorsport lineage while giving way to revolutionary changes inside the cabin. Luxurious materials such as rich brown leather, a mesh combination known only to the elite, hand-stitched double stitched for seating resembling the unmistakable double seams found in every 917 racing car and advanced surfaces have replaced any material lacking true function for everyday driving; yet retains the same clean-cut aerodynamics of the full racing car. In particular, the luxurious cupholder has been designed specifically from 3D Printing, while incorporating authentic Atlanta Southern beverages with unique proportions.
In an attempt to pay lasting tribute to Porsche's heritage and legacy - all within one road-going machine that stands as a monument not only for Porsche’s past glory but also an evocation of modern road driving standards.
Engineered by the global expertise from renowned professional team members spearheaded by Timo Resch, including renowned motorsports management specialist Urs Kuratle, racing classic restoration master Ralf Strack and top class racing technical director Jonathan Diuguid etc., along with exclusive assistance from their renowned automotive research facility that only competencies exist within the prestigious "Classic Car Restoration Center of Atlanta". This was completed in just ten weeks.
And although this unique road car will not enter mass production and, officially being unveiled at the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance races alongside a few private customer cars before going to be put into a dedicated Museum.
