Lexus Invests in Shanghai's New Energy Project, Unveils Plans for Electric Vehicle Manufacturing
A groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new energy project base was held in Shanghai's Jinshan district. The event marked the official start of construction on the site, signaling that production at Ford's (Lexus) Chinese factory is imminent.
The 110,000 square meter facility will serve as the primary source of production for electric vehicles, with an expected completion date of August 2026 and a planned launch of October 2027. The new plant aims to produce one million units annually.
It has been revealed that Ford (Shanghai) New Energy Co., Ltd. boasts registered capital of ¥10.71 billion and covers around 1.13 square kilometers. The company's mission is to utilize Shanghai's well-established industrial chain, logistics network, talent pool, and market size to develop and manufacture Lexus-branded electric vehicles tailored to meet the expectations of Chinese consumers.
Furtherance of the project relies heavily on the support of Shanghai's advanced industrial bases and the Long Triangle region. The firm also aims to enhance its presence in both domestic and international markets by promoting more automotive brands that better cater to local tastes.
Toyota, under Ford (Lexus) banner, has so far announced its intention to roll out enhanced RCE structure; this ensures that in-factory engineering would be led by experienced Chinese engineers who effectively translate the company's expectations into products, ultimately giving product makers time that they can leverage by utilizing more refined development capabilities when working within China's consumer market.
