The Reason Behind Xiaomi's SUV U-Turn: Sticking to Its Sports Car Roots

Xiaomi Launches YU7 SUV, Distinguishes It From Traditional Boxes

On June 23, Lei Jun, a founding executive chairman and CEO of Xiaomi Group, responded on social media to questions about why the company did not produce a six-seat SUV from its first model. Lei emphasized that SUVR stands for "Sport," meaning that the vehicle is essentially a "运动型多功能车" with sporty characteristics.

Xiaomi YU7: A High-Performance and Luxury SUV

Lei Jun clarified that YU7 was not just another ordinary, unremarkable SUV known as a "box." Instead, it's an advanced luxury SUV focusing on both high-performance capabilities for drivers and comfortable spaciousness for passengers. In the era of new energy vehicles ("彩电冰箱大沙发"), he believed it was essential to prioritize factors like power sources, infotainment systems, and user convenience. Moreover, the driving experience should also be highly regarded.

YU7 embodies this idea - a vehicle that combines luxury and athleticism while meeting everyday comfort needs through ample space.

Ideal i8: An Eight-Passenger SUV for Families

After Lei Jun shared his post on Twitter, Zhao Xing, CEO of Ri Ji Auto (formerly known as LeEco), shared an image of Ideal i8 with comments. As an entirely electric and three-row six-seat SUV, Ideal i8 is opposite in direction compared to YU7's sporty focus. Ri Ji Auto CEO Zhang expressed his wishes that users consider the Ideal i8, especially during Xiaomi YU7’s anticipated success.

By sharing these examples, both companies highlight two different yet valuable approaches to addressing consumer needs. It leaves consumers with multiple options based on their preferences for high-performance driving or spacious family vehicles.
