Shanghai M8 Review: Is This $36,800 Motorized Power Boost Worth the Wait?

Huawei's New M8 SUV to Hit the Market on April 16th

A middle-sized luxury SUV, the Huawei M8 is set to debut on April 16th, marking a significant addition to Huawei's growing lineup of electric vehicles. The car has been open for pre-sales since recently, with a price range of 36.8-45.8 thousand yuan ($4,850 - $5,850). During the pre-sale period, buyers can enjoy an exclusive promotion: 5000 yuan will be discounted towards the total purchase amount up to 10,000 yuan.

In terms of design, Huawei's M8 SUV embodies a new family style language that promises power without excess. The distinctive design elements include the triangular-shaped Big Headlamp group at the nose side, LED daytime running lights integrated into the bumper, and an integrated slot for directing airflow from the front section to help control drag. The car's stance is further enhanced by larger wheels paired with aggressive wheel covers.

The exterior profile is sleek yet not too minimalist in design. Additional features include a longer hood with a wide air inlet at the bottom. While sleek, the style still expresses an overwhelming sense of energy and power from every front angle view.

For interior configuration, Huawei M8 utilizes a three-screen system, including: an instrument panel, center touch screen controls, and passenger screens on either side; it also comes equipped with advanced sound technology developed by HUAWEI SOUND. To top that, the dashboard features advanced safety features, complete with HUD (heads-up display) driver assistance technology, providing drivers enhanced visibility.

Throughout the interior space, passengers have a wide range of convenience features: a comfortable glove compartment along the middle console in front of passenger seating has been equipped for ample cargo space; while storage compartments are available not just at both side doors, but also under passenger seats. The rear seat option allows users to accommodate 5 or 6 passengers.

Finally speaking of performance figures and energy efficiency, Huawei M8 offers a combination propulsion system powered by its most updated technology from the past time, an increase in boost power that enhances acceleration speed of more than three times at low- and medium speeds, with front and rear electrical motor combined to offer peak values of 165 kW + 227 kW. With all electric driving it can maintain the maximum capacity for long-distance travel without worry and offers a long-range capability: over 300 to 1,526 km respectively.
