China to Offer New Electric Model, K-Car, in Japan Market
A series of leaked images has surfaced online showcasing the new all-electric model from Chinese automaker BYD, codenamed K-Car. The car is expected to target the Japanese market, where it will compete with existing models.
The design of the K-Car appears to be compact, but spacious, having garnered praise from consumers in Japan. However, the model currently for sale in Japan is typically an internal combustion engine variant with smaller power outputs compared to BYD's offerings at a lower price point.
From the leaked images, it can be observed that the K-Car is characterized by its small size and shorter front and rear overhangs and longer wheelbase. This compact design allows for increased interior space while maintaining a tidy exterior profile. Key features of the vehicle include a triangle-like window on the driver's side seating and sliding doors in the rear seat area, as well as distinctive front larger headlights.
Regarding its powertrain, due to its lighter body and lower weight, BYD has envisioned that the K-Car will be powered by only a 20 kWh battery pack. According to calculations under the Japan WLTC testing standards, this translates into a maximum of 180 km in range during use.
Japanese automobile dealers have expressed their anticipation for BYD's entry into the Japanese market as having a considerable impact on domestic sales models and consumer perception. Other countries are not left out, as seen in previous offerings such as the Roewe Piappa model; this one’s potential success in China remains to be seen given the unique preferences of local consumers.
